What Other Lawyers
Say
#5. Angela Rothe
When Judith asked me to write a reference,
my first thought was … how shall I procede? How can I cover
all the things I did in one page?
Here you will find the result, which does not
pretend to be complete, but which I hope will help to illustrate
a little bit of my experience.
I am an articling student from the Italian part
of Switzerland. I will start working in January 2003 with a firm
that does international law, so I started looking for a Legal English
Course.
I found plenty of language schools offering some legal courses,
such as teaching English legal terminology, but one in particular
attracted my attention: Lawyers who teach English to other lawyers
from abroad, focusing on practical skills … I was skeptical
if that the course could really deliver all that it promised!
Now I can affirm that Judith Milliken’s
Q.C. Legal English course is the best thing for anyone who is interested
IN MORE than improving his/her English skills.
Judith is an amazing teacher, and has an incredible
wealth of valuable experience from which to draw. Not only is she
an effective and skilled communicator, she has the perfect background
for teaching students who are unfamiliar with the common law system.
Having studied civil law in Quebec, and further,
having learned legal French doing trial work there, she has the
experience that enables her to understand the needs and difficulties
of her students. She is particularly skilled at helping students
who are trained in a Civil Law system to understand and navigate
through the common law system: a system governed by cases, where
finding rules or codes appears like treasure hunting, and where
everyday one discovers a new concept, completely different from
one’s own system, like the countless variations on trusts.
Judith is a person who has found her vocation.
She loves what she is doing and consequently is very determined
to seek out the best for her students. Everyday she comes up with
new ideas, and she really cares about her students.
As an example, I asked Judith if it would be possible
for me to get some practical legal experience while I was staying
in Vancouver. Judith introduced me to several crown prosecutors,
and now I can hardly manage to attend the trials I was invited to
…
Judith has a great social network, sometimes it
seems as though I am before a magician: lunches, dinners and meetings
with judges, crown prosecutors, lawyers, seminars with trial lawyers
…
It has been a privilege and honour to get to know
Judith on both professional and personal level, I highly recommend
her and her school to anyone who is interested in, pursuing developing
their legal English skills.
Please feel free to contact me for any further
information.
